KENT COUNTY COUNCIL MICRO SURFACING REPAIR

Kent County Council, Forge Hill, Aldington, TN25 7DT

Applied on 9th October 2020

The Need:

Kent County Council have an active preventative maintenance programme of micro asphalt surfacing. Whilst the surfacing programme is working well, there is an ongoing challenge where the ironworks have to be lifted following the surfacing works. This is where the subsequent reinstatement repairs of 2m² max regularly fail. Kent County Council were looking for an alternative solution to reinstate ironwork surrounds which offered improved performance, reduced whole-life costs, and offered carbon efficiencies.

Solution:

The areas to be reinstated are often small, requiring relatively low volumes of material and making them uneconomical for traditional hot-lay solutions. The PermaFyx L271 is a cold applied system that can be applied using equipment and material from the back of a small commercial van, thus removing many hidden costs in the energy, waste and transport associated with hot applied systems. The MMA formulation of PermaFyx L271 also has very good adhesion properties to steel, offering additional durability performance properties.

Summary:

The proposed system met all project objectives and road trial results were favourable for the client and installation contractor. In conclusion, it is a time efficient, environmentally friendly solution which is more financially viable than hot lay repairs for smaller areas.

System Used

PermaFyx L271 MMA Surface Repair with 2-6mm aggregate.

Line reinstated with UltraLine L210.
