IMPROVING CYCLEWAY SAFETY AND RIDER EXPERIENCE

IMPROVING CYCLEWAY SAFETY AND RIDER EXPERIENCE

We are being increasingly encouraged to cycle to and from work and limit the usage of cars in city centres and other built up locations. However there are currently no specific regulations set out for cycleway surfaces in the UK.

Plenty of advice has been offered however, covering the key considerations such as skid-resistance, durability and colour demarcation.

It has become common practice to include coloured demarcation along cycle routes to improve user safety, especially in areas of high traffic, junctions and on corners or other high risk areas.

These high risk areas are a critical area to improve the safety, as almost two-thirds of cyclists Killed or Seriously Injured (KSI) are at or near junctions, where the risk is greater. (J. Knowles et al, 2009)

When applying a coloured demarcation, it is important to consider the skid-resistance variation between existing surface and the new coloured surface.

Ideally this variation needs to be minimal in order to maintain consistency across the riders entire route and improve safety when passing on and off these coloured areas.
