Meon is proud to be one of the sponsors of the Ocean Dadventure. 3 dads, 1 ocean rowing boat, and 3000 miles will be competing in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. Our customer Neil Furminger from NF Construction & Driveways from East Sussex has joined up with Matt Garman and Steve Woolley to compete 3000 Miles west from San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain, to Nelson's Dockyard, English Harbour, Antigua & Barbuda.

About the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge brings together teams from all walks of life united by the same objective: to take on the unique challenge of crossing an ocean in a rowing boat. The atmosphere is electric as people help each other prepare for the challenge of the mighty Atlantic Ocean. Teams battle with sleep deprivation, salt sores, and physical extremes inflicted by the race. Rowers are left with their own thoughts, an expanse of the ocean and the job of getting the boat safely to the other side.

The race offers different experiences to all involved. The challenge creates strong friendships, and competitiveness gives way to the camaraderie that is required to complete the challenge. Upon finishing, rowers join a small community of friends that have shared the adventures of an ocean crossing. The mental and physical endurance will result in a life-changing achievement that will never be forgotten.

About Ocean Dadventure

With space on the boat at a premium and without the ability to carry reserve provisions for an emergency, the crew's preparation will be critically important to their survival. In this challenge of a lifetime, Ocean Dadventure, will attempt to complete the journey in 40 days, on a brutal shift pattern: working in pairs, 2 hours on, 2 hours off, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This means a maximum 2 hours available to sleep when not rowing, for approximately 40 days (and nights), exhaustion in Antigua is guaranteed!

Along with the 40+ foot waves, freezing conditions, cramped sleeping quarters and the thought of knowing you have to get up and do your shift again before you ever really rest is a sure fire recipe for sleep deprivation. Averaging over 12 hours of rowing per day, each member of the team will be pushing themselves to limits they never knew existed.

There are two charities that are close to the guys hearts and they are Wolo Foundation and Prostate Cancer UK.

The chosen Charities for the event

Wolo Foundation

Wolo Foundation help families living in Sussex through their cancer journeys. They support them by offering practical help and support to make their day-to-day lives easier. They work with local businesses and communities to offer families a wealth of services to support them through their diagnosis, treatment and beyond.

Wolo pride themselves in offering a personal service to the families they support – they have no limit on the amount of support they provide, or the length of time they support for – cancer is a long journey – and Wolo will be there throughout.

Statistics show that 1 in 2 people in the UK born after 1960 will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Life is precious – we need to make the most of it – we only live once – WOLO!

Prostate Cancer UK

Prostate Cancer UK's top priority is funding research to stop prostate cancer killing men. We're investing millions to find better treatments and better tests that can spot fast-growing cancers early, and could be used in a screening programme to save thousands of lives.

Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition – to stop men dying from prostate cancer. Through shifting the science over the next 10 years to focus on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and support, we will stop prostate cancer being a killer.

About NF Construction & Driveways Ltd

After 5 years serving in the British Army, Neil Furminger left and started working for his family business re-instating tarmac behind utility companies, laying Gas, BT and cable TV ducts, but having always wanted to work for himself, Neil used his experience of tarmacking, paving and curbing to start his own company. They also do work for Scottish Power and Energy Network Services laying electric cables and reinstating. Although NF Construction has grown, Neil still works on the tools ensuring both quality and customer satisfaction.
